Updates

One of the reasons why I began to collect patches is my interest in learning about other law enforcement agencies.  It is always interesting seeing how other agencies are set up, their history, what their various units are, what their special responsibilities are, etc.  In this section of my website, I will feature a patch from my collection and have a short summary about the agency that the patch represents.  If the department being featured has a website, clicking on the patch will lead you to the department website.  I will attempt to update this section of my site every couple of weeks or so.

I try to publish information regarding my featured patch/agency from at least two sources.  These sources can be from the internet, printed publications, communications from members of that agency, etc.  I apologize for any errors.

Orange County Sheriff's Department (California)

The Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) is among the largest sheriff's departments in California and provides law enforcement services throughout the county.  Orange County's sheriff (currently former Orange County Marshall Mike Corona) also is the coroner for the county.

Providing a wide range of law enforcement services, the OCSD is staffed with over 1,400 authorized sworn deputies and special officers backed up by about 1,500 civilian support staff.  In addition to patroling unincorporated areas of the county, the OCSD also provides patrols services to 12 cities in the county such as Villa Park, Stanton, San Clemente, and Mission Viejo.  Deputies and Special Officers also provide patrol services for the Orange County Transit Authority and John Wayne Airport.

All Sheriff's Departments in California are mandated to operate county jails.  OCSD operates several jail facilities throughout the county.  After the 2000 merger with the Orange County Marshall's Department, the Sheriff's Department also assumed operations in the county's courthouses and provides these services through the department's Court Operations Section.

The department also operates a regional law enforcement training academy, a harbor patrol, and several specialized units such as Vice, the Gang Enforcement Detail, and the North Narcotics Detail.  Other units include Special Weapons and Tactics, Hostage Negotiation, Motorcycle Traffic Enforcement, and the Canine Unit.
